2021-03-25

Some lawyers in Hong Kong held a press conference in the Legislative Council On the afternoon of March 23, pointing out that there is much false content in the World Report 2021 which was published by Human Rights Watch on January 13 and this report has caused public misunderstandings and confusions. They also refuted the fake news in the report about the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, a member of the Legislative Council for New Territories West constituency, said that he will write to the UN Secretariat to give a detailed account of the reality in the mainland and Hong Kong and clarify the facts.

Junius Ho said that the Hong Kong part in the world human rights report by Human Rights Watch mainly focuses on the riot in 2019. He criticized that some content in the report is totally inconsistent with the real situation in Hong Kong. Given that he personally experienced the riot, Junius Ho said he is absolutely qualified to refute the fake news in the report and it is necessary for him to do so.

According to Lawrence Ma Yan Kwok, a well-known lawyer in Hong Kong, there are a lot of fake news about Hong Kong in the report. He said that the report is full of prejudice against China and it is one-sided without any evidence. For example, he said, words such as “totalitarianism” and “suppression” used in the report clearly exposed the position and intention of Human Rights Watch. As legal professionals in Hong Kong, they must stand up for China through writing articles in English to refute the fallacies in the report concerning Hong Kong and speak with facts, Lawrence Ma said.

Kacee Ting, another well-known lawyer in Hong Kong, who also attended the press conference, said that an objective report should take into account the overall development and national conditions of a country, and it is necessary to for the reporter to know the real situation through an on-the-spot investigation. However, Human Rights Watch, not knowing what is really happening, maliciously attacked Hong Kong. The content of its report is one-sided, attempting to cover up the facts and spread discrediting remarks against Hong Kong. Kacee Ting said he hopes the UN will carefully review the report and not adopt the fake report.
